CREATING CALM

By eschewing bold colours and focusing on luxe textures, the designer of this new build bedroom has created a sophisticated space

After moving into their newly built detached house in Reigate, Surrey, the owners were keen to transform the generous main bedroom from a blank canvas into a luxurious retreat. To ensure they got it right, they called in Andrew Henry, director of Andrew Henry Interiors.

THE BRIEF

‘The client wanted the look and feel to be along the lines of a high-end boutique hotel,’ says Andrew. ‘They wanted to create a lavish adult sanctuary with walk-in dressing room and en suite – somewhere to relax and unwind after a busy day running their own business. It had to flow with the rest of the house and complement the greenery outside.’

DESIGN SOLUTIONS

‘As it’s a well-proportioned space, we were able to incorporate a super king-sized bed, bespoke winged headboard and separate seating area,’ says Andrew. ‘Positioned next to the Juliet balcony, the seating space was created to take in the views overlooking Reigate Common and Windmill.’

To create a relaxing and inviting space, Andrew used a colour palette of sophisticated neutrals, layering different textures including linen, silk and velvet. ‘To add a touch of drama, we created a bespoke midnight blue velvet winged headboard,’ he adds. ‘The use of blues had been incorporated elsewhere in the home, but this space was designed to be more restful than others. Including a tonal palette alongside the rich blues in the bedroom helped to elevate the space while still creating a natural flow throughout the home.’

As with many new build homes, the house already had downlighters in the ceiling as standard. ‘We wanted the space to feel cosy and inviting so incorporated ambient lighting in the form of table and floor lamps,’ says Andrew.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Andrew’s attention to detail has paid dividends and the owners were delighted with their new look bedroom. The use of high thread count Egyptian cotton bedding and a sumptuous throw, alongside bespoke soft furnishings and cushions, all helped tie the space together while adding a touch of opulence.

‘A successful interior design scheme may not always be about using strong colours,’ he says. ‘A calm palette can often be equally as sophisticated.’
