1 On set, the ac­tor wore track­ing mark­ers on his face, and a fair amount of pros­thetic make-up pieces and crack­ing added by prac­ti­cal ef­fects com­pany Odd Stu­dio. Some­times Javier Bar­dem would even wear a blue screen patch.

2 Roto-ma­tion of Bar­dem’s per­for­mance was the start of the process for MPC to then add in dig­i­tal el­e­ments for scar­ring, skin pieces and for deal­ing with neg­a­tive ar­eas that would also re­quire the com­posit­ing in of back­ground ar­eas.

3 MPC’S pro­pri­etary Fur­til­ity groom­ing sys­tem was used to make up fine and dam­aged hair strands and dread­locks, which was then given the un­der­wa­ter sim­u­la­tion or hand-an­i­mated to suit. One of the big­ger chal­lenges was main­tain­ing hair move­ment con­sis­tency across shots.
