GCAP PERFORMANCE 991 GT3 RS TUNING PACKAGES
London-based premium marque tuning and maintenance specialist, GCAP Performance, has released details of its duo of bespoke tuning packages for the first-generation 991 GT3 RS. The Stage 1 option comprises a custom ECU tune for the host GT3 RS’S naturally aspirated flat-six, boosting the four-litre unit’s output to between 525bhp and 530bhp with torque capped at 360lb-ft. The more involved Stage 2 option introduces an applicationspecific decat pipe to the proceedings, lifting power to between 540bhp and 550bhp with torque capped at a safe 370lb-ft. Both packages are entirely reversible, enabling a switch back to factory specification with ease.
Where many tuners access the 991 GT3 RS’S ECU through OBDII connectors and additional software, GCAP’S technicians connect to the unit directly following removal, thereby eliminating the risk involved in relying on third party software to protect the ECU during custom mapping. This ‘pin on’ approach results in bespoke software being written to the ECU in a much more controlled environment. What’s more, the GT3 RS’S electronic brain doesn’t need to be opened at any time — there are no changes to the Porsche part’s motherboard. In fact, there are no hardware alterations of any kind, further emphasising the availability of a return to factory specification for resale or main dealer recall purposes.
Additional power from your Porsche is all well and good, but what about standard engine protection features? Fret not. Both of GCAP’S 991 GT3 RS tuning packages leave the factory electronic knock protection, catalyst overheat detection and intake air temperature safeguards intact, enabling their continued operation regardless of power upgrades, which GCAP installs from its headquarters in West London.
Following a thorough assessment of the host
GT3 RS’S health (both mechanically and as far as its existing ECU software is concerned), the applied GCAP custom map comprises four key features. First, throttle is adjusted to promote greater response. Second, the car’s engine — known to run slightly lean from factory — is treated to an enriched fuel mixture, ensuring cooler and more efficient running. Thirdly, electronic torque tables are altered to get the very best ‘pull’ throughout the rev range. Lastly, the rev limiter is increased by a sensible 600rpm.
Both GCAP 991 GT3 RS tuning packages have proved popular following completion of development work, leading the company to begin its 992-generation 911 tuning programme. Heavily suppressed factory ECU software coupled with the potential for big bhp and bags of extra torque from the model’s standard biturbo flat-six promises to open up a strong new generation of custom maps. In the meantime, 991 GT3 RS owners in search of more grunt and the release of trapped ponies should point their Porsches in the direction of Notting Hill. Well, what are you waiting for?!
