TAYCAN TURBO S SETS PRODUCTION EV LAP TIME
A production-spec Taycan Turbo S charged over the finish line to post an impressive lap time of 1:33.88 minutes at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta last month. Located just a short distance from the headquarters of Porsche Cars North America, the circuit’s technical S-bends, long straights and elevation changes demand excellent feedback, stability and power from any car, no matter the body style or powertrain.
“This track is unforgiving, meaning you have to have complete trust in your car,” says professional racer, Leh Keen. The real surprise came when cornering — the combination of Rear Axle Steering, optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport and the well-programmed Sport Plus stability control, enabled Keen to push the electric sports car harder than he thought was possible. “The performance through the turns was surprising. Turn-in, in particular, was crisp and consistent, and the steering response was immediate and communicative. The power pins your head back coming out of any corner, and the brakes have excellent feedback,” he added.
Vehicle data acquisition and timing experts from Uk-based motorsport technology firm, Racelogic, were on hand to record and verify Keen’s lap time utilising their celebrated VBOX HD2 system, widely considered the ultimate in video data logging for those who want to achieve better lap times and greater consistency at the wheel. The kit consists of dual 1080p cameras, allowing for a main view with embedded picturein-picture. The lenses are wide-angle, ensuring every moment of track action is captured in stunning high definition, while graphics are overlaid in real time, giving the user great scope for dashboard and gauge layouts. An accompanying smartphone app allows finetuning of camera orientation, with real-time video output being displayed on the linked mobile device’s screen. An optional predictive lap timing OLED display driver is also available.
