911 Porsche World

OWNER OPINION

Gerald Boyden bought his 991.1 GT3 in January of this year following time spent restoring a 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. Many years ago, he worked at Porsche Centre Colchester, where his love for the 911 was met with the opportunity to deliver and collect many new customer cars. As soon as the 991.1 GT3 was released, he was smitten.

"It's my dream Porsche," he tells us. "I don't participate in track days, hence buying a Comfort-spec GT3, though it did come with PCCB and the front lift kit. I find the 996 GT3 far too firm for regular road use, whereas my GT3 is a lot more forgiving. The seats really do absorb impact very well. Put it this way, I drive the car to work and back at least three times a week and enjoy heading out for focused drives on early mornings. I dont feel fatigued after being in the car for lengthy periods of time, though I concede getting the best out of a GT3 requires more concentration from the driver than a GTS or Turbo."

Having covered only 15k miles from new, Gerald's GT3 is in immaculate condition, its paintwork protected by the previously mentioned PPF. The car remains exactly as it was originally optioned, save for the appointment of a PIE Performance Tuning (PPT) rear silencer delete. Manufactured in the UK from engineering-grade titanium, TIG welded, back purged, featuring Cnc-machined flanges, laser-cut brackets, mandrel-bent tubing and a bright polished finish, the system has been developed to achieve balance between a power increase and enhanced exhaust sound. The result is an exhilarating howl at full chat and a snappy bark under sharp revving, but without the kind of maintained drone which might make living with the system difficult on a full-time basis. Additionally, the PPT system' s titanium construction and competition-specification fasteners offers significantly reduced weight.

"If you're not chewing through tyres at the track, the cost of running a 991.1 GT3 is very reasonable," Gerald suggests. "This car handles beautifully, as you'd expect from what is essentially a race car for the road. It's a 911 delivering real 'wow factor', squirting through corners like you wouldn't believe. I love it!"
