The Accrington Pals – a Lecture by Accrington historian, Les Bond at the Haworth Art Gallery
LES Bond will be giving one of his celebrated talks on the Famous Accrington Pals. Les has been telling the story of why young men from Lancashire, died in a muddy field in France, for many years.
He has a keen insight into the worst disaster in British Military History. He talks about the direct link between the American Civil War, and its lasting effects on the county in the early twentieth Century, which in turn led to the recruitment of family members from around the area, many of whom paid the ultimate price.
The town of Accrington has recently been the focus of worldwide attention, with the Commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. Les lays bare the mistakes, the failures, and the arrogance which led to the carnage that was The Somme.
Hear this fascinating and moving story at Haworth Art gallery on Sunday, August 21, at 2pm. This is a free event and there is no need to book – but please be early to secure your seat. The Haworth Art Gallery will shortly be hosting a live outside broadcast of the John ‘Gilly’ Gilmore show on Radio Lancashire.
