Students go for gold at games
PUPILS from schools across Hyndburn gave their all at the largest youth sporting event in the county.
More than 2,000 pupils from 15 districts competed in the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals in Blackpool.
Following months of qualifying competitions to earn their places in the finals, pupils didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits as they battled it out in 16 events including athletics, cricket, gymnastics, tee ball and mini tennis.
Team Hyndburn was represented by Accrington Academy students who took part in the inclusive football event.
Peel Park Primary School pupils represented the borough in gymnastics, and St Mary’s Oswaldtwistle in girls’ football.
Hollins High School students was in action in the athletics event, St Bartholomew’s Primary School took part in cricket and tri golf while Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School pupils gave it their all in handball. Elsewhere, St Anne’s and St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School youngsters aimed for glory in mini tennis.
Despite not picking up any medals, there were some excellent performances from Hyndburn teams, who had all proven themselves the cream of the borough just to qualify for the keenly contested Stanley Park event.
Jane Johnson, school games organiser for Hyndburn, said: “The SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals event is the highlight of the county’s school sports calendar and this year didn’t disappoint, with fantastic performances in all sports and it was brilliant to see the athletes giving it their all.
“I’d like to thank the volunteers and school games makers without whose support the county finals wouldn’t be possible, and a huge well done to Hyndburn pupils for doing our district proud.”
