PICTURES: Virgin Islands relief worker recalls hurricane ‘armageddon’. Shane Killaway, from Accrington, has revealed the devastating aftermath of Irma and Maria (website October 11) Jane Holmes: Well done Shane and the rest of the Rubicon gang. Denis Scaife RE: Great to see that you got some local recognition Shane. Sean Mason: He’s a good one.

THIEVES rip up more than 20 flagstones from Oswaldtwistle street. It comes after other streets in Accrington were targeted last month (website October 11). See page 14. Kath Walmsley: I had my Yorkshire stone flags stolen from Rhyddings Street several years ago. They then came back a month later and stole some more. Whoever took mine got away with it, the police said they probably knew who was responsible but they would have been long gone and the flags would have been sold straight away..... no evidence. Elizabeth Ashworth: Tarn Avenue Claytonle-Moors, top layer of stones from the two walls went a few weeks ago in broad daylight. Vernon Yates: It’s been years since I visited Accrington, I remember seeing police on the street. What happened, did it stop? Broken Windows. Policing could stop a lot of this. Stephen O’Brien: Police numbers have been cut drastically. Lindsay Ormerod: I got a crime number for mine, sadly I can’t afford the £500 to replace them and have them nicked again! #Stillraging Janet Whittaker: There have been stones stolen from the perimeter wall around Bentcliffe gar- dens recently also! Joe Hall: Of all the things to steal. God bless Accrington. Judith Vaughan: When I lived in Accrington, a few years back, the flags of my entire back yard were stolen. Lorren Hall: Yep more stones have disappeared on Dowry Street this morning. Russell Whalley: Yes off my wall in Clayton, no police around nowadays so they have free reign. Mark Evans: What sort of scum do we have in this town, maybe it’s random but I don’t think so. David Thornley: As someone once said to me about a similar thing. “If they called it work they would not do it.” Maria L Marraffa: Can’t believe it? Very bizarre!

LUXURY apartments revealed for arsonravaged Accrington Conservative Club. The remains of the Grade II-listed building will be incorporated into the development (October 6) Mandy Louise: Some more unaffordable housing in Accrington town centre, have they not learnt?

Why can’t Hyndburn council work with social housing associations (Hyndburn Homes, Together Housing, Accent) to provide affordable housing for families on low income?

Seriously great the building being used but what about being realistic? Lisa Michelle Bloor: The council don’t own the land nor have the money to buy it sadly. Morgan Philip Rothwell: Brilliant! It will bring money, investment and higher value (even if only slightly higher) homes which are needed to lift the area.

23 new households paying council tax, spending money in shops and restaurants and providing better quality accommodation in an area that desperately needs it to improve. Daphne Hall: It’s great to see a renovation finally happening, but Accrington does not have a demand for luxury apartments, and this development isn’t going to see that demographic moving into the area unfortunately. Sarah Brenna Flynn: Better placed using it for social housing where the need is greater! Still, glad that something’s happening! X Daphne Hall: My thoughts exactly!

Use it to support the growing homeless population and young families needing help. Brandon Rogan: Usual wave of negativity it seems.

Think it’s great that something is being salvaged from that eyesore and I just wish it happened more often in Accy town centre. Best of luck. Sharron Fairweather: People moan there’s a housing shortage and moan when homes are being built!

Got to be better than how it is now. Too much focus on the past, need more plans for the future. James Ford: So can we assume that one of the last rows of free parking (in front of the building on Cannon Street) will be lost to the development? Jo Reeves: Looks like they’re keeping the original frontage. Pam Janey: All of the others round there are still empty.. so unless they’re a better price they’ll sit as empty as the others! Anthony Burton: Agree on that plenty of empty flats and apartments locally. Enid Cartlidge: Glad the building is being put to use but we need affordable housing in this town. Morgan Philip Rothwell: Every journey starts with the first step! Valerie Edmondson: It saddens me to see the gradual demise of Accrington.

30 years ago ‘Accy’ was a vibrant shopping centre and entertainment centre, catering for the children, teenagers and adults alike.

A great shopping centre second to none, a beautiful arcade full of shops, well known retailers in the Arndale, a fantastic open market and market hall....please can someone, anybody enlighten me to what has happened?
