Mayor’s column

- Peter Britcliffe

IN 1917 Melvyn Jones, a 33-year-old Chicago Business Leader told members of his local business club that they should reach beyond local business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world.

A meeting of similar groups took place on June 7, 1917 and a new group formed. A national convention was held in Dallas in October of that year and the Association of Lions Clubs was formed. Within three years they became an international organisation with a steady vision and a clear mission to better their communities and to improve the world.

An example of the work they do worldwide is Sight First, which has raised some $346 million targeting the causes of blindness from cataracts, glaucoma etc.

The Lions grew worldwide and groups were formed in Europe during the 60s and 70s.

They have some 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in over 140 countries.

Their branch in Accrington, open to all in Hyndburn and not just Accrington people, formed in 1967. Early in October Sara and I had the honour of joining them and their current President, May Edmundson in celebrating at their 50th Charter Dinner.

It was a great occasion with Lions from different townships congratulating President May and wishing her well in her Presidency and for the work done over the years to improve lives here in Hyndburn and abroad.

Accrington Lions have played an important role for many years. Up to and including 2015 they organised Accrington Carnival, raising thousands of pounds for charity. Last weekend they held their Halloween Party, expected to be attended by over 200 local children and at the same time raising charitable funds.

Accrington Lions truly serve the community here in Hyndburn and are involved in many events.

During the summer they were involved in the Rishton Festival and are currently raising monies to help young Zoe attend a trip of a lifetime to the world scout jamboree in the U.S.A.

Christmas will soon be here and the Lions have launched their Annual Toys and Teens Christmas appeal.

This year it will take place on December 9 and they are looking for donations of new or good condition pre loved toys and games, and where possible games consoles as a lot of older children are referred.

Referrals are received from children’s services across Hyndburn, 250 last year so Lions need the support of the public and local businesses.

This year collection points Mon to Fri 9am to 2pm are; Pampered Pets, Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, Community Solutions, Gatty Park, Church, The Globe Centre, Accrington, and Sparth House, Whalley Road, Clayton. Or you can arrange collection by calling free on 08458337386.

The Lions need your support and I know the good people of Hyndburn will not let them down.

After Christmas the Lions will be busy taking part in the Worldwide Week of Service to fight hunger from January 9 to 15.

Truly they live up to their motto “We Serve”.
