Cap­i­tal hol­i­day for cater­ing stu­dents

STU­DENTS from Ac­cring­ton Col­lege of Fur­ther Ed­u­ca­tion fea­ture in this week’s Look­ing Back.

Fifty-six house­keep­ing and cater­ing course pupils trav­elled to Lon­don for an ed­u­ca­tion hol­i­day in the mid-1970s.

The pic­ture on the top left was taken by Garth Daw­son and ac­com­pa­ny­ing them on the trip were Mr P Smith, head of de­part­ment and lec­tur­ers Mr V Ma­ley, Mr L Pyznuick, Miss N Kitching and Mrs C Kay.

Ac­cring­ton Girls High School pupil Bev­er­ley Jean McNa­mara (be­low right) be­came the fourth mem­ber of St Au­gus­tine’s Guides in Hun­coat to re­ceive the Queen’s Guide Award.

The pre­sen­ta­tion was made dur­ing even­song at St Au­gus­tine’s Church by Ann Kenyon, pres­i­dent of the Guides’ As­so­ci­a­tion.

Loy­ola Cubs Paul McCaf­fery, Shaun Gal- lagher and Mrs Bar­bara Har­g­reaves were pic­tured in the Ob­server (left) af­ter their head­quar­ters at Hip­pings Vale Park was dam­aged by van­dals.

The hooli­gans smashed nine wire pro­tected re­in­forced glass win­dows and stole out­side wall signs, com­passes and books.

Philip Bent­ley and Jacque­line Mangam were among the first chil­dren to en­joy the fa­cil­i­ties at the newly opened Elim Play­group (bot­tom left).

The group, based on Black­burn Road in Ac­cring­ton, was run by Mary Del Monaco.
