Best of the bunch
Caryopteris, or Bluebeard, is a welcome sight in late summer and autumn, a shrub that bears blue flowers, providing colour in the garden and nectar for pollinators, especially butterflies.
It’s best grown in full sunshine and a light, well-drained soil. ‘First Choice’ is a relatively new cultivar which has intense blue flowers and a good compact habit, making it suitable for the smaller garden.
In spring, prune back flowering stems and mulch annually with garden compost or well-rotted manure.
