Wembley shot attracts Coley

-

STANLEY manager John Coleman has praised the Checkatrade Trophy and says his side should take advantage of any opportunity to reach Wembley.

Stanley were victorious against Macclesfield Town in their opening game in the competition on Tuesday, as two goals from Offrande Zanzala along with strikes from Sam Finley and Dan Barlaser earned the Reds the win.

The format has received criticism in recent years for allowing U21 sides from Premier League and Championship teams to enter, but Coleman is in favour of any opportunity his side have to potentially reach the final and book a trip to Wembley.

“I like it. I do not see why people slate it. For me, it gives me a chance to get players game-time under their belts and it’s a realistic way for us of getting to Wembley, we are one of just two clubs who haven’t played there in the Football League,” he told the club’s official website.

“The prize money is also healthy, perhaps not for the higher placed teams, but for clubs like us and Macclesfield it can make a difference.

“For Under 21 teams, it’s a chance to play against men. Playing in Academy games can sometimes be like a cocoon so it’s a good game for them.

“You only have to ask Lincoln fans if they enjoyed the Checkatrade Trophy last season. It’s a realistic chance for us to go to Wembley.”

It was Macclesfield’s first game since parting ways with their manager Mark Yates, and Stanley boss Coleman was disappointed to see someone he classes as a friend lose them job.

“Mark is a good lad, it’s always going to be tough. I know what a difficult job it can be first hand and I am sorry to see Mark go,” he said.

“I remember when we were promoted from the Conference into the Football League, no one expected it, and it is difficult as you are punching above your weight.”

Elsewhere in Stanley’s group this week, West Brom U21s picked up a 2-1 win at Blackpool. Stanley take on West Brom U21 on November 6.
