WHERE IS TIME SAVED?

-

I AND most motorists would whole heartedly agree with Les Moore’s letter (`Too late to be driver’s pal’, Observer, September 28).

We are going to have another part of the Pennine Reach Scheme from Brisbane Street to the traffic lights at the Hare and Hounds imposed on us.

As we had with the scheme at Clayton-leMoors at Woodlands, this part of the scheme took about nine months to impose a bus lane and traffic lights for a stretch of road for about 350 yards to speed up the buses.

It takes 22 seconds to travel from Lynwood Avenue to Sparth Road then the buses cross Sparth Road and rejoin the main traffic flow on Whalley Road.

Where is the time saving?

He mentions the bus stop opposite each other on Whalley Road, these were said to be calming measures.

That’s the last thing they were.

They cause traffic jams and frustration at peak periods or when two buses arrive at the same time.

He is correct about the traffic lights at Sparth Road only letting three cars pass before the lights change.

He asks where were the council objections when we had the bus lane and bus stops opposite each other?

These schemes are, I believe, the responsibility of the Highways Department and this comes not under Hyndburn Borough Council but under Lancashire County Council. AP Moxham Great Harwood
