GIRLS and boys danc­ing the night away at a church disco are shown in this week’s Look­ing Back.

More than 100 smartly dressed young­sters took part in the event at St Charles RC Church and mu­sic was pro­vided by the church’s over 14’s group.

The pic­ture (be­low right) was taken by for­mer Ob­server pho­tog­ra­pher Garth Daw­son in the 1970’s.

Vol­un­teers ral­lied to sup­port the Oswaldtwistle Youth Group at their an­nual meet­ing af­ter an ar­ti­cle in the Ob­server (left-cen­tre).

Pic­tured are sec­re­tary Mrs B Rush­ton, ju­nior com­mit­tee mem­ber Miss J Clough, trea­surer Mr A Lib­ber­ton, Hyn­d­burn dis­trict youth of­fi­cer Mr J Lees, and ju­nior com­mit­tee mem­bers Ian Beat­tie and Paul Lib­ber­ton.

A new com­mit­tee was formed for the Holy Fam­ily Par­ent Teacher As­so­ci­a­tion in Ac­cring­ton.

Around 50 mem­bers at­tended fol­low­ing the re­tire­ment of John Mit­ton and the group are pic­tured be­fore a film show (top left).

Ac­cring­ton High School Girl Wendy Old­ham struck a blow for In­ter­na­tional Women’s Year by re­ceiv­ing a Post Of­fice Stu­dentship in com­mu­ni­ca­tions and en­gi­neer­ing science. The pre­vi­ous year only 20 places were awarded and all went to men.

She is pic­tured with fel­low pupil Su­san Rid­yard (top right) who gained a place at Cam­bridge Univer­sity.

Win­ning tro­phies was a piece of cake for Bax­en­den girl Enid Wood (bot­tom left).

The 20-year-old was awarded the Goldex Cup for cake dec­o­rat­ing at Black­burn Col­lege. She also won the Ren­shaw Cup which in­cluded an all ex­penses paid trip to Lon­don.
