GIRLS and boys dancing the night away at a church disco are shown in this week’s Looking Back.

More than 100 smartly dressed youngsters took part in the event at St Charles RC Church and music was provided by the church’s over 14’s group.

The picture (below right) was taken by former Observer photograph­er Garth Dawson in the 1970’s.

Volunteers rallied to support the Oswaldtwis­tle Youth Group at their annual meeting after an article in the Observer (left-centre).

Pictured are secretary Mrs B Rushton, junior committee member Miss J Clough, treasurer Mr A Libberton, Hyndburn district youth officer Mr J Lees, and junior committee members Ian Beattie and Paul Libberton.

A new committee was formed for the Holy Family Parent Teacher Associatio­n in Accrington.

Around 50 members attended following the retirement of John Mitton and the group are pictured before a film show (top left).

Accrington High School Girl Wendy Oldham struck a blow for Internatio­nal Women’s Year by receiving a Post Office Studentshi­p in communicat­ions and engineerin­g science. The previous year only 20 places were awarded and all went to men.

She is pictured with fellow pupil Susan Ridyard (top right) who gained a place at Cambridge University.

Winning trophies was a piece of cake for Baxenden girl Enid Wood (bottom left).

The 20-year-old was awarded the Goldex Cup for cake decorating at Blackburn College. She also won the Renshaw Cup which included an all expenses paid trip to London.
