Thefts after he was deported
DEFENCE barrister Colette Renton said Titus Jelea committed the offences after being made redundant as a bricklayer.
The court heard that Jelea had lived in the UK for 14 months before being deported back to Romania in 2016. He then returned to the UK in February this year and committed the eight thefts within months of his arrival.
Miss Renton said Jelea has since suffered a ‘major event’ in his life after two of his children were killed in a car accident in Romania.
The court was told that Jelea is also wanted in Romania for fraud offences and is facing new deportation proceedings.
Judge Heather Lloyd said Jelea had ‘shown no insight or remorse’ into his offending and is a ‘thoroughly dishonest man’.
Sentencing, she said: “These eight offences were planned and quite deliberate. You have had a tragic event in your family and you are grieving.
“Whether this lifechanging event will change your attitude to crime and your inherently dishonest nature, only time will tell.
“You say you want to return to Romania so I assume you will not contest the extradition proceedings.”
