SKY BET LEAGUE ONE PETERBOROUGH .......... 0 STANLEY......................... 1 SHELDAN KEAY

ACCRINGTON Stanley were victorious on Saturday as they picked up all three points away from home against Peterborough United.

Sean McConville got the only goal of the game after just 11 minutes to ensure that his side got the win at the ABAX Stadium.

Stanley manager John Coleman was pleased with the victory, and praised his players for their performance in the game.

“It’s a difficult place to come. You always expect a Steve Evans team to be intense in their play as he’s been fortunate enough to be blessed with big budgets and he uses them well. He gets good players, so to overcome that is great,” he told the club’s official website.

“We were deserving of the win and had enough chances in the first half to score more. We defended well, and I don’t think our goalkeeper had to make a save of note. In the last 15 minutes if we had a bit more composure we could have made it more comfortable.

“Some of the passing we do really pleases me and it is good passing moves that creates most opportunities.

“It’s a good win, but we are still very early on in the season and there is a long way to go with twists and turns. We’ve got a method of playing that we like and the players like, so they buy into it.

“They all work hard, and that’s not just the ones who are playing but the ones who are trying to break into the side. There is a great togetherness here and we are all in it together.

“It’s not us dictating to them, we don’t rule by fear. We all have a common goal and purpose and an enjoyment of football.”

Stanley made a good start to the game and it didn’t take them long to get the opening goal. McConville was able to slot home from close range after Offrande Zanzala’s initial header had been blocked.

Jordan Clark then thought he had doubled his team’s lead just moments later, but former Accrington goalkeeper Aaron Chapman denied him with a good save.

Peterborough tried to get back on level terms, with Matt Godden firing a long-range effort against the crossbar, but other than that the home side found it tough to break down the Accrington defence.

The first major chance of the second half fell to Stanley, as Dan Barlaser’s attempt took a deflection and hit the post.

The action quietened from that point onwards, with neither side able to create any major chances.

There was time for Godden to go close late on when he scuffed a shot wide after a cross from Marcus Maddison, but Stanley held firm to ensure they came out on top and left Peterborough with all three points.
