Policeman undergoes surgery after BMW collision

AN investigat­ion has been launched after a police officer was hit by a BMW leaving him with a serious injury.

Emergency services were called to the incident on Eastgate in Accrington at around 8.50pm on Thursday, November 29.

Lancashire Police said the officer approached a suspected stolen BMW 2 series car to speak to the driver as it was stationary at traffic lights.

The car was then in a collision with the officer who suffered an ankle injury.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment and to undergo surgery.

Three men arrested in connection with the incident have been released under investigat­ion.

A 24-year-old man from Accrington was arrested on suspicion of a burglary offence and a 24-year-old man from Burnley was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods relating to the stolen vehicle.

A 19-year-old from Burnley was detained on suspicion of GBH and burglary.

Lancashire Police said a 38-year-old man from Blackburn arrested shortly after the offence has been released with- out charge. Det Chief Insp Zoe Russo said: “Despite us making an arrest I would urge any- one with informatio­n about this incident to come forward and contact us as you could have important informatio­n to assist our investigat­ion. Our thoughts are with our colleague and his family. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
