Thug attacked ex’s aunt outside town bar

ADRUNK thug who punched a woman outside a town centre bar before putting a knife against his ex-partner’s throat in a ‘terrifying’ incident has been jailed.

Jordan James Sargeson attended the iBar in Accrington in the early hours of December 2 last year while his ex-partner was enjoying a night out with her aunt and another family member.

Prosecutor Stephen Parker told Burnley Crown Court how his expartner became ‘very upset and hysterical’ when she saw Sargeson and they decided to leave after suspecting he had a knife.

The court heard that dad-of-two Sargeson followed them outside and was ‘shouting and swearing at them’ and threatened to knock the aunt out.

When the aunt told him to ‘go ahead’ the defendant punched her with a clenched fist to the side of her head.

Mr Parker said the 23-year-old then walked off down the street and was followed by his expartner and they were ‘arguing, pushing and shoving each other’.

Police were called to the area after a CCTV operator spotted the incident and found them sat outside Accrington Town Hall with a knife on the floor.

The court was told that minutes before police arrived Sargeson was captured again on CCTV pulling a five-inch knife from his pants, grabbing hold of his ex-partner by the neck and then ‘brandishing’ the knife in her face.

Sargeson, of Edgar Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to battery and making threats with an offensive weapon.

The roofer, who has 19 convictions for 27 offences, was jailed for 12 months.

Darren Lee-Smith, defending, said Sargeson was ‘intoxicated’ and had ‘little recollection’.

He told the court that they had been in a relationship for 11 years and problems developed when she decided to get a job at a local bar.

The court was told that he ‘turned to drink to shield himself from the loss of a loving 11 year relationship’ and the incident was ‘very much out of character’.

Judge Sara Dodd said Sargeson’s actions were appalling.

Sentencing, she said: “You don’t just wave [the knife] at some distance, you put it right up to her neck with your hand around her neck.

“It must have been, however well she knew you, a thoroughly terrifying episode for her.”
