Youth club team line-up
THE Whalley Road Youth Club football team are shown in this week’s top picture.
The players competed in the Accrington Combination in 1970 and the picture was submitted by Observer reader Peter Ashworth.
Our next picture (top right) shows the final of the Observer Ladies Golf Championship, held in Baxenden in 1979.
Pictured are (front row l-r) Mrs M Stones, Mrs M Bleasdale, chairman Mrs O Whatmore, honorary secretary Mrs J Mercer (back row) Mrs P Wolstenholme, Mrs M Wilkin, Mrs J Tomlinson, Mrs E Schofield, Mrs P Batchelor, Mrs D Vause, honorary treasurer Mrs M Rowbottom and Mrs I Mills.
A beautiful country with a gorgeous climate was just a memory for 20-year-old Wendy McCormack who returned to live in the UK after six years in Rhodesia (pictured right).
Wendy was the younger daughter of Oswaldtwistle’s Veronica McCormack and said the thing she missed the most after her husband was the sunshine.
More than 500 people visited the children’s library in Accrington for a model exhibition showcasing various aircraft modelling kits and books (bottom right).
All the exhibits were provided by Wolstenholme Handicrafts in Accrington and the event marked the re-opening of the library following heating problems.
The picture shows Philip Hurst, age seven, and Ian Hurst, four, admiring a model helicopter on display.
Our final picture this week shows Elizabeth Edmundson being crowned the new Sunday School Queen of Rishton Methodist Church at a ceremony in the late 1970s.
The 11-year-old, who attended Norden County High School, was crowned by the retiring queen Sharon Johnson.
Also pictured are Ian Hodgson, Janice Swindlehurst, Deborah Wild and Nicole Johnson.
