-

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Hyndburn council chief executive who died after a battle with cancer.

Mike Chambers, who served the local authority for eight years between 1995 and 2003, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in August last year.

He passed away peacefully at home on June 21 aged 62.

Announcing his death at a recent council meeting, Mayor June Harrison said: “Many of you will remember him well. He was a dedicated to local government officer and served the people Hyndburn faithfully.”

Council leader Miles Parkinson said he ‘served the council valiantly’.

He said: “Mike took the council, like other chief executives, along through difficult times, listening to the controlling group at the time with [former leaders] George Slynn and Peter Britcliffe.

“He served this council valiantly while he was here and our condolences to his family.”

Councillors Abdul Khan and Munsif Dad praised Mr Chambers for his support in helping to form the of Asian Community Forum and promoting community cohesion.

Conservative leader Tony Dobson said he was ‘extremely sincere and took his position extremely seriously’ while former council employee turned councillor Judith Addison said he was a ‘very fair person and approachable’.

A minute’s silence was held at the council meeting in memory of Mr Chambers and for former Great Harwood councillor and Walk-in Centre campaigner Chris Reid, who passed away last month.
