CHURCH AND OSWALDTWISTLE ROTARY

-

A NUMBER of years ago Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary adopted the local railway station, and members have been spending every Saturday morning, apart from during the winter months, sweeping, cleaning, planting, weeding and watering to make the station look its best.

Now that summer is in full swing the hard work is certainly paying off, as the platforms and the steps leading up to them are pristine and the flower beds are a riot of colour.

The planters outside the station, which were planted up by the Rotakids from St Andrew’s and installed by the Rotary, are also looking amazing, and are a haven for bees and insects.

Coupled with the bat boxes, hedgehog house and bird boxes (fully occupied this year!) which have been installed around the station, Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary and the Rotakids have helped to make a small wildlife oasis in the middle of an urban, built up area.

President Lyndon Heap said: “The upkeep of the station is very important to us at Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary.

“Our members work very hard to keep it looking immaculate.

“It is the first thing that rail passenger arriving in the town see, and we want to give them a good first impression of Church and Oswaldtwistle.

“We must thank Graham West from ISS for ensuring that the paintwork is up to scratch, and Network Rail for making sure that the track is kept weed free.”

If any members of the public would like to help with the work at the station, they would be very welcome on a Saturday morning between 10am and 12 noon.

HYNDBURN ROTARY FLEX

WHEN the Hyndburn Rotary Flex group asked Tesco for their help to raise funds to buy extra supplies for local food banks, they were truly delighted to receive a cheque from Tesco Accrington on Monday.

Helen Birtwistle, from Rotary, said: “The long summer school holidays can put extra financial pressure on families at this time of year.

“Although food banks are generously supported at Christmas, they can be overlooked or not even considered at other times.

“The Hyndburn Rotary Flex group wanted to raise awareness and we have been overwhelmed by the support given by Tesco Accrington.”

Tesco Community Champion Alison Redmond, Teresa Fitzjohn from Maundy Relief and Helen were able to fill three shopping trolleys which were then whisked to Maundy Relief to restock their shelves.

Hyndburn Rotary Flex group are always looking to welcome new volunteers to help with their community projects.

If you can spare any time at all, please contact us via our Facebook page: Flex Rotary in Hyndburn.
