Bahja bash a big hit

-

BUDDING young footballers have taken part in a new football tournament at Hyndburn Leisure Centre.

The event featured 17 North West teams, including seven from the borough, and was organised by the Bahja Initiative in Accrington.

Sohail Asghar, a volunteer for the community group and secretary of Bahja FC, said: “It’s the first youth tournament we have done and something we are going to do on an annual basis.

“We have two adult tournaments every year and the main purpose of this one was to attract teams for the local community.

“We wanted to have young lads who play on the streets come together and make a team.”

The tournament winners were FC WYA (under 10s), Cammell Lards (Under 12s), Alps United (Under 14s) and ABCDE FC (Under 16s).

It was held on Sunday, July 7, attracting more than 250 people and was sponsored by PC Cellulars and Podo Group.

The Bahja Initiative provides opportunities through sport, education and community projects, runs a weekly curry club and provides food parcels.
