Splashing time!

-

MEMBERS of St James’ Church Accrington had a splashing time in the pool at Hyndburn Sports Centre.

For two hours, 25 members took the plunge to raise money for the repair of the school in a sponsored swim.

The picture above was taken in March 1978 by Garth Dawson and the event raised more than £100.

There were more than 50 entries for a fancy dress competition at St Charles’ RC Primary School in Rishton.

The event was split into pre-school, infants and juniors and there was a special prize for the best Miss Piggy, won by Andrea Baron, pictured top right.

Charles Houlker’s 25 years’ service of the 1st Baxenden Scout Group was recognised when he was presented with a cut glass crystal vase.

Mr Houlker was a founder member of the Baxenden Scouts and held several positions with the group.

The presentation was made at Baxenden Conservative Club by the District Commissioner Eric Jones, of Church, who also presented Philip Stone with his Queen’s Scout Award (pictured centre right).

More than 400 people attended the annual Platt Saco Lowell Works dance at Accrington Conservative Club.

Workers from the Accrington and Helmshore branches of the engineering firm were entertained by Les Allen and his Band and Brenda and the Trebletones.

Our final picture this week is of a tramps concert at the Cross Guns Hotel in Church in the late 1970s, which raised £60 for a cancer fund.

The event - organised by landlady Edith Barker and other ladies - boosted the Pat Seed Cancer Fund.

Pictured are Alan Short, Sheila Short, Barbara Holden and David Holden.
