ALWAYS HAVES AND HAVE NOTS

-

IN the film Shooter Senator Charles Meachum says you may as well be on the side that gets you well paid for your effort.

But there are no sides, no Sunnis and Shiites, there are no Democrats or Republicans, there are only have and have nots.

That, sadly, is true throughout history. Well to do people who supported the winning kings etc ended up with lordships etc. That was the way it was.

The class of wage earners in the past in an economic society whose only possession was their labour power.

Today, there are millions of these people who own their own properties bought or buying them through their own hard work.

We have people like our last but one Labour leader who left office poor but he’s now a multi-millionaire.

There are more entrepreneurs now than there has ever been from all classes of society.

Again, Brian Livesey says that I have unwittingly let myself be used as a political pawn in a dispute that isn’t my concern (Letter, July 12).

Why is it not my concern? Just as a previous generation of workers did on behalf of propertied interests does he think this applies to today’s property owners from all classes? In societies throughout history there has always been the haves and have nots and his Socialist Party of Great Britain has done nothing to change or alter it, or ever will.

Perhaps it’s time for him to live in the twenty first century, not in the past.

Would he be content if every body live in penury? Perhaps he should thank God, if he believes in him, that he was born in a western country and not in a poor village in Africa, where they do sadly live in penury. A.P. Moxham Great Harwood
