Crowd pleasers

-

A WORKING Men’s Club annual presentation night features in Looking Back this week.

A packed house filled the King Street venue in Accrington in 1974 for the Accrington and District Federation of WMC’s event, pictured top left.

It came at the end of a week which saw the finals of the individual bowls and snooker competitions which had both commanded big crowds.

Our next photo, top right, shows Mrs E Oliver, of Baxenden, receiving a St Valentine’s day greeting from Liberal candidate Ivor Cooper.

The life-long Liberal, who could recall Lloyd George’s election campaign, celebrated her 84th birthday a few days earlier.

They are pictured with Liberal agent Bill Matthews and chairman Ken Marsden.

Accrington Junior Schools cricket team won their second consecutive match of the season when they defeated a strong Oldham side at Thorneyholme Road.

The Accrington team, pictured right, featured (back row) John Crisp, Mark Aspin, David Schofield, Keith Hanson, Christopher Cobb, Duncan Hannon, (front row) Robin Wolstencroft, Andrew Gardener, Mark Newman, Andrew Barker and Stuart Taylor.

Fifteen members of Baxenden Autumn Club enjoyed a breath of sea air when they visited Heysham, the group is pictured on the bottom right of the page.

Their coach followed a country route to Glasson Dock where they looked at the boats, after which the party enjoyed tea at the Sea View Tea Gardens.

Our final photo this week depicts when friends and fellow members of the New Era Youth Club in Accrington said goodbye to one of the original members.

Eddie Martin, a member since its formation, left Accrington for Dundee in Scotland and a farewell party was held at The Bridge on Church Street.

The picture shows (back row) Mr M Grey, Mrs W Tagg, Mrs S Lovell, Mr H Rawcliffe, (front row) Mrs S Taylor, Mrs S Henry, Eddie Martin and Mrs M Sutcliffe.
