Five refuse wagons ‘torched in attack’
ANUMBER of council bin wagons were torched in a late-night arson attack.
Police were called to the scene of the compound on Brown Street in Accrington at 11.50pm on Monday, December 2.
A total of five bin wagons were set alight and huge flames could be seen engulfing the vehicles.
Officers are treating the fire a suspicious and an investigation is underway.
A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We were called around 11.50pm yesterday (Monday, December 2) to reports of a fire at Hyndburn Council Compound in Brown Street, Accrington.
“Five bin wagons had been set on fire causing significant damage.
“The fires were extinguished by firefighters with no injuries reported.
“The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway. Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting log 1642 of December 2.”
Hyndburn Council has thanked the public for their patience following the arson attack and said refused collections are not affected.
A spokesperson said: “Following disruption to our recycling service cause by a fire at our depot on Monday, five replacement wagons are due to be delivered over the next two days.
This means that there will be no changes to recycling collections on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. Refuse collections are also not affected.
“For recycling that we were unable to collect on Tuesday 3rd December, this will now be collected on Thursday 5th December.
“If your collection day was Tuesday 3rd December, please put your recycling bins out by 7.30am on Thursday 5th December. Thank you for your understanding and continued support for recycling in Hyndburn.”
