Charity walker’s lockdown slim down

ACHARITY walker who followed the steps to a fitter and healthier life through the trials of lockdown is celebrating after shedding seven stone to hit her target weight.

Jamie Loader, says her impressive weight loss is thanks to staying active and following the ‘everything in moderation’ plan laid down by her Baxenden slimming group – which she says has prevented her from veering off course during the pandemic.

While many have battled to stay in shape due to the disruption of routines during Covid, Jamie completed a 10,000 steps a day challenge in March – in the process fundraising for the Samaritans.

Jamie, 29, joined Marisa Bannan’s Slimming World group at Baxenden Conservative Club Village Club in 2019, and after lockdown first hit last year, the group went online with meetings held via Zoom.

She said: “Back when this all began I panicked a bit. I couldn’t concentrate on my weight loss or eating as healthily as I did before because everything else seemed so up in the air.

“Having the knowledge and support of my local group really helped me through this challenging time – I felt as if I had the tools to cope.

“We were in lockdown for so long and it was a bit of socialising, but also a massive support. It was so good to keep in touch with everyone and I’ve not felt on my own with my weight-loss for one moment. If I didn’t have that I would probably just have gone back into my old habits. I didn’t want to go on there and not be ‘on plan’.”

Jamie raised about £200 after completing 310,000 steps during March, pounding the streets of Baxenden and near her home in Haslingden alongside partner Brad.

Previously reluctant to stretch her legs, she has gained in self-confidence as her weight has tumbled, and began regularly walking a mile and a half to work at The Valley College as part of her routine.

Jamie says she is getting there a little bit at a time, and having now reached her goal weight, is focused on getting healthier and continuing the good work.

She added: “Previously I wouldn’t really put myself forward to do anything – I would always wear black – and now I’m trying to step out of my comfort zone.

“I’m just so positive about things. I enjoy eating fruit and veg now, and I absolutely love cooking.”

Group leader Marisa said: “Lockdown has had an effect on all of us.

“It’s really no surprise it’s had an effect on our choices around food, drink and activity. I know I’ve had my days when it’s felt really difficult to stay motivated, and that’s completely ok, we’re all only human. I’ve been so excited to get back to my real-life group and see everyone again, which is running with a few changes to keep everyone safe and reassured.”
