ANEW group is working on a wide-ranging project to improve Kemp Delph in Stanhill.

Newly-formed Kemp Delph Outdoor Activity Centre is working alongside Hyndburn council, residents and Community Interest Company Proffitts - Investing in Communities.

The area is a well known local beauty spot, and already a popular place with walkers. In the recent past there were safety fears raised following reported incidents of people jumping from rocks and swimming at the quarry - also known as ‘tombstoning’.

The group working on the project want to enhance the natural surroundings, but will also look at what changes need to happen to make the site safer too. Some initial plans have already been drawn up, but more consultation with local people is due to take place over the next couple of months.

Martin Proffitt, Director of Proffitts - Investing in Communities, said: “Early suggestions for improving the area include pathway creations and better access and boundary works - all with the aim of making Kemp Delph a safer place to visit.

“Once the site is safe, then we hope to see an increase in both the number of activities and the types of activities offered.

“Of course, the area will still be fantastic for walking and wildlife, but there is potential to attract more people for fishing or even rock climbing too.

“I would encourage anyone who uses Kemp Delph already or is interested in using it more in the future, to get involved in the consultation and share their suggestions.”

The project is only in the early stages, but the longterm ambition is to make Kemp Delph popular with people of all age groups, and encourage people to get involved in more outdoor activity.

Andy Barnes, from Kemp Delph Outdoor Activity Centre, said: “We’re extremely lucky to have wonderful places like Kemp Delph right on our doorstep, especially now when access to exercise and fresh air is so important.

“Local families have been through a lot over the last 18 months, and it’s exciting to be able to work with the community and get their thoughts and ideas for improving the area and making the most of the site.”
