Players return for quiz night

- Peter Leatham Chairman of the Official Accrington Stanley Supporters Trust

AFTER a break of 18 months the Supporters Trust were finally able to stage our first members’ event with a players evening in the temporary marquee at the Wham Stadium.

We were delighted to welcome skipper, Seamus Conneely, defender Michael Nottingham and new recruit Harry Pell for an evening of fans’ questions and a light hearted England v Ireland quiz, with Seamus more than holding his own against the numerical advantage of the English pair.

All were in good spirits after the Reds decent start to the season and Conneely is hoping to return from injury in the coming weeks.

Harry has settled well into his new Northern surroundings and spoke very highly of the Stanley squad and the strong player bonds.

Michael is feeling very comfortable at the heart of the Stanley backline having replaced stalwart Mark Hughes in that role.

Many topics were discussed, with the dementia heading debate at the fore as well as more light hearted topics such as Harry’s unique middle name (look it up!).

Many thanks to the players, all the fans that attended and Josh Adcroft for asking the questions.

At the same event, We also thought it was appropriate to mark the departure of one of the true heroes of Stanley in recent times.

After 14 long years of a lonely vigil on a mower groundsman, Martyn “Buzzer” Cook has left the club and made the short journey to Burnley.

He has worked tirelessly, with scant facilities, to maintain the Wham Stadium pitch in a constant battle against the East Lancashire elements and the various humps and hollows of the older playing surfaces.

The constant view of one man and his mower was a very familiar site over the years and he leaves with all the best wishes of his many friends at Stanley.

He was presented with a shirt voucher for his beloved Liverpool and a superb oil painting depicting the man on his mower at the stadium, this was completed by our board member and fine artist, Mike Procter.

The forthcoming home fixture against the Latics from Wigan, on Saturday, September 18 will be a category A all ticket fixture on the advice of the police. Stanley fans will be able to purchase tickets from the club, in normal office hours up until a day or so before the game.

Don’t miss out on what is sure to be a great North West derby match!
