Where is God in this messed-up world?

-

That was the public’s lead question in a survey at Accrington market this week as we asked people about their hopes. The war in Ukraine was forefront and most said they felt hopeless facing today’s world. So where is God…? Where’s Hope?

God originally gave us perfection in a garden called Eden. The population of two were told to

“Go forth and multiply,” and they delightedly obeyed. Yet, as we multiplied, so too did our problems. Everybody wanted to be their own mini god; all wanting their own way.

The Ukraine is a sad consequence.

God has always been around. He sent Jesus his Son to show us how to live then allowed him to suffer on a cross, taking the punishment for all our wrongs. These days, God’s Spirit is with all who invite him into their lives. Now, he is planning a New Heaven and Earth for all who want love, joy and peace for ever.

The Ukraine?

Simply, God stays his hand. His Good News, and ours, is this: God loves us and doesn’t want to lose any of us. He waits, yearning for us to make our peace with him, yet still giving us freedom to choose.

The deeply religious people of Ukraine, though shocked and suffering, still have an inner peace in knowing for certain that no mere dictator will ever win. Their hope is in a mighty God who gives free will, who will one day rescue all his children who choose his heavenly future.
