Person dies in fire at rail station

A PERSON has died at a train station in East Lancashire following a fire on Wednesday morning.

A huge emergency services response descended on Church and Oswaldtwis­tle station (pictured above) shortly before 6.30am on Wednesday, March 13.

British Transport Police said it followed reports of a ‘person on fire at the location’.

Officers said the person, who has not been identified, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The platform was closed for more than four hours while forensic officers carried out an initial investigat­ion of the scene.

A spokespers­on for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Church and Oswaldtwis­tle Station at 6.27am this morning following reports of a person on fire at the location.

“The person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“The platform was closed whilst forensic officers carried out an initial investigat­ion of the scene.

“The station reopened at 10.35am. The incident is believed to be nonsuspici­ous.”

The tragic incident resulted in services at multiple Lancashire stations either being cancelled or revised.

Preston and Colne and also between Blackburn and Manchester Victoria/ Headbolt Lane.

In an update at 11.45am on X, formerly Twitter, Northern said: “Disruption caused by the emergency services dealing with an incident near the railway between Blackburn and Hebden Bridge has now ended. Services are no longer affected by this problem.”
