Youngsters book in for day of fun

- YASMIN AL-NAJAR

CHILDREN across the borough dressed as their favourite characters from books, TV series and movies for World Book Day.

The annual celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the joy of reading took place last Thursday.

To celebrate the occasion, youngsters got creative and excitedly put on their best outfits ready to show their teachers and friends at school.

Some children opted to look like royalty donning tiaras and wearing elegant outfits resembling beloved Disney characters including Aurora from Sleeping Beauty and Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

Characters from popular Roald Dahl books were also chosen including Miss Trunchbull from Matilda and an Oompa Loompa and Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

DC comic characters were also popular this year such as The Flash and Batman.

Other children got ready to enter the world of witchcraft and wizardry, wearing their magical Harry Potter outfits. The cheeky Tracy Beaker was also chosen as well as the classic fairy tale character, Little Red Riding Hood.

The nation’s favourite bear, Paddington Bear, who starred in a fun sketch alongside Queen Elizabeth II in 2022 to mark the start of her jubilee celebrations, was also selected for this year’s World Book Day.

Pupils at Huncoat Primary School dressed up as their favourite book character or in their pyjamas for a bedtime story and took part in some exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) activities all linked to a book they are currently reading in their class.
