The editor finds some clean white light for the winter’s gloom
The editor finds the ideal, white-light head torch from Fenix. Impressive illumination from a 1000-lumen beam
As the evenings get dark, I find that I use a head torch almost every day and, to be honest, I think I’d be lost without one. I use one when walking the dogs, finding things in the shed or the loft and, of course, when out hunting. Like all modern LED devices, head torches have become more powerful while becoming cheaper at the same time
The Fenix HP25R on test is the most powerful head torch I’ve ever used, with its 1000 lumen beams, a number that I still find hard to believe. How could something so small and light produce such an amazing output? The aluminium housing has three LEDs; the big one is the narrow beam for long distance; the smaller one with the textured lens is the flood beam; and the tiny one is a red LED for close-range use. The two main beams have four power levels, allowing you to adjust the output for the situation, but I have to confess that I enjoyed the fullpower settings most, only dialling the power down for closerange use.
The reach of the narrow beam makes this a viable option for rabbit lamping without the need to bolt a torch to your scope, and the flood is superb for finding shot quarry, and other important jobs such as packing your gun and kit safely into the car at the end of a successful night shoot. Offering a low output red LED is superb because it allows you to load magazines or make adjustments to your scope’s setting without dazzling your eyes and compromising your night vision.
Power is supplied by a high- quality 18650 Li-ion rechargeable battery that’s carried in a casing at the back of your head. This keeps the system nicely balanced and once you have the straps adjusted for your own needs, it stays put very well indeed. The battery can be charged in its housing with the USB lead included or taken out and topped up in a conventional charger. I like the fact that the battery is removable because I can carry a spare just in case. There’s nothing more frustrating than your lamp going flat halfway through an evening’s shoot.
This tough, water-resistant and powerful torch is right up my street, offering all the features I want at a reasonable price. I can see this one will be getting lots of work this winter and for many more after that.
