Jailed for racist remarks
A sheriff told a foul-mouthed lout who subjected a cop to a barrage of racist abuse that he “must go to jail” for his crime.
Edmundas Sutkevicius will spend the next four months behind bars for targeting the officers, after earlier hindering paramedics trying to give him medical attention.
The constables were called out to Coatbridge’s South Circular Road on May 28 and Sutkevicius was arrested.
The 38-year-old admitted his guilt at Airdrie Sheriff Court and returned for sentencing last week.
The procurator fiscal told the court: “Police on mobile patrol were instructed to attend and assist paramedics.
“The officers saw the accused being obstructive and shouting ‘f****** Pakistan, f****** Pakistan’.
“Ambulance personnel confirmed there was no need for him to attend hospital.
“When leaving the ambulance he said to the officers ‘f****** whore women’, ‘f****** Paki wh*re’ and ‘you’re f****** pigs’ while laughing.”
Defence solicitor Mark Fallon said: “This was a rather unsavoury sequence of events, especially as the people involved were trying to assist the accused.
“He is quite candid and accepts his responsibility.
“He is not coming to court with an extensive record. He has a good work ethic and would be in a position to pay a monetary penalty.”
Sheriff Morag Galbraith took a dim view of Sutkevicius’ actions when passing sentence: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable, especially as these people were trying to help you. You must go to jail.
“It would’ve been six months but I reduced this to four due to your cooperation, and I this will be backdated to May 31.”
