Amy on way to the top
A Coatbridge designer impressed judges with her artwork for a Highland youth hostel.
Amy Neil, 20, who studies art and design at New College Lanarkshire’s Cumbernauld campus, wowed the judging panel in the SYHA Hostelling Scotland competition with her map using a variety of media.
Amy and her fellow students Shannon Strang and Thomas Galloway teamed up with the organisation on the five-month project to produce designs to transform its Crianlarich youth hostel.
The three winning creations were announced at the college’s art and design end- of- term exhibition at the Kildonan Street campus in Coatbridge.
Shannon used moss to tie a scene of Crianlarich together with the natural beauty of its surroundings. Thomas created a modern design based on the walkers who frequent the area.
The winners will each receive a two-night stay at a youth hostel of their choice and could see their masterpieces brought to life at Crianlarich.
Amy was also honoured as the college’s HNC student of the year at the ceremony, which was attended by over 200 people.
Lecturer Kelly Cunningham said: “Our students had a very clear brief from SYHA and the variety of ideas produced was just incredible.
“They have greatly enjoyed the experience of working on a live development with a real client.
“It is exciting to think that our students’ work could now be viewed by both national and international visitors to the hostel.”
Amy Pierzchalo of SYHA added: “We were delighted to see such a variety of creative ideas submitted.
“We really appreciate the work put into this project by the students of New College Lanarkshire and wish the students involved all the best with their future studies.”
