Drumpellier get nearer safety

Loss to struggling team

- Kerr Davidson

Drumpellier’s preparation for their Citylets Scottish Cup Quarter Final hit a snag on Saturday as they lost to league basement side Stenhousemuir at Langloan.

The Coatbridge outfit batted first but could only muster a score of 138.

Mathew Goles scored 26 while only three other batsmen made it into double figures; Josh Sajjad managed 18 runs, Ayazz Qasim accumulated 11 and Zeeshan Aziz finished 18 not out.

In reply, the visitors never really looked troubled in the chase.

Rushdi Jappie top scored with 34 as his 68-run stand for the fourth wicket with Amir Shahzad powered Stenhousemuir to victory,

The result pulls Drumpellier further away from safety in the WDCU Premier Division table as they now sit 21 points adrift of local rivals Uddingston.

Stenhousemuir remain bottom but had they not been deducted a total of twelve points so far this season they would be just one point behind the Langloan men.

But despite the loss, club spokesman Gordon Shaw remains positive ahead of this weekend’s crunch Scottish Cup tie with Ferguslie.

He said: “We are really looking forward to the game.

“It is an excellent opportunity for a lot of our young guys to gain more experience.”

“Ferguslie are flying high at the top of the table, but as we have proven in the previous round, we can beat anyone on our day.

“Hopefully we can make the home advantage count again.”

Drumpellier’s mercurial league performances have been punctuated with some quite sensational cup results.

In the last round of the Scottish Cup they took the scalp of CSL East league leaders Forfarshire. as well as also claiming big wins over Marchmont and Hillhead in the Western Union 40 Over Cup.

A Murgitroyd Rowan Cup Quarter Final with Stirling County at New Williamfield beckons on Thursday where Drumpellier are keen to capture the trophy they won in 2013.

Shaw added: “We still have a lot of cricket to play this season.

“If we can carry over what we’re doing in the Twenty20 form of the game then I am sure we will be safe come late August.”
