Get the odd jobs done around your home this summer

-

Summer is often the time of year we take a look around our home and notice small jobs needing done.

The sunshine glistening on our dusty shelves can make us panic.

So hear are some tips on how to get summer cleaning and give your home a sparkle.

Clean your showerhead: Showerheads can get quickly get covered in grime without you really noticing, causing water blockages. Fill a clear sandwich bag with warm water, vinegar and lemon, then tie the bag tightly round your showers nozzle to allow the mixture to soak in and remove any dirt.

Create your own oven cleaner: Cleaning your oven can often prove one of the most frustrating of all your spring cleaning tasks, especially when cleaning products aren’t cheap. Try making your own formula out of vinegar, dish soap, baking soda and a lemon or lime to create your own grease removing oven cleaner.

Homemade microwave cleaner: Put some cut–up lemons, cider vinegar and water in a microwaveable bowl before placing the bowl on full power in your microwave for several minutes. Leave it to steam inside your microwave for ten minutes to remove odours before easily wiping away any remaining stains.

Clean up greasy cabinets: It can often be hard to spot the grease that builds up on wooden cabinets, but if left long enough without cleaning you’ll soon start to notice it. Mix equal parts warm water and soap before wiping the greasy surface down and drying it with a separate cloth. Baking soda is also an effective alternative.

Unblock your drains: Unclogging drains without having to buy specific products is easier than you might think.

Pour boiled water into the blocked drain before adding a cup of baking soda. Next, add a mixture of warm water and vinegar before pouring in more boiled water. Your drain should be good as new.

Create your own fabric freshener: Add a good amount of fabric softener and water to a spray bottle to create your own DIY freshener.

Squeegee the pet hair: Pet hair gets on everything. Try scraping hair-covered surfaces with a squeegee to remove your cats and dogs moulting manes.

Baking soda on your mattress: Cleaning your mattress is something people often overlook, but seeing as you spend a third of your day asleep it’s important to regularly give it a proper clean. Once you’ve removed all bedding and the sheets, cover your mattress in large amounts of baking soda to soak up any odours. The longer you leave it there the more effective it will be.
