Family history experts sharing knowledge at advice sessions

- Ian Bunting

The Lanarkshire Family History Society is going “on the road” in Airdrie to bring its services and resources closer to those wishing to use them.

One evening a month between August and December, the group will set up shop in the community room at the Tesco store in Airdrie retail park.

Society members and non-members alike will be able to drop in for advice on researching their family, assistance on breaking through those genealogical “brick walls”, or help to start out in building a family tree.

The sessions will take place on the second Monday of each month – August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13 and December 11 – from 7pm until 9pm.

No booking is required and society members with expertise in family history research will be on hand to give help and advice, and – if required – can arrange to bring books, maps or other resources from their research centre to the following month’s event.

Society chairman Bob Stewart said: “This is a new initiative to support our members locally, and a chance for nonmembers to meet us and get some help and advice.

“We have already had a request from a member to bring along our set of maps for all Lanarkshire dated 1896, so they will be available at the August evening.

“I look forward to meeting everyone who can manage along to Tesco.”

Lanarkshire Family History Society is “grateful to Tesco Airdrie for allowing free use of its community room”, which is at located at the far end of the supermarket’s checkouts.

If this pilot project is a success, the society hopes to take this service to other parts of Lanarkshire and to find out more about the group and the Airdrie- based sessions, visit http:// www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk/
