Summer success for Workie’s B shockers Surprise win over Carsons helps them to title

- Mark Pirie

Workmen’s B claimed a shock win over Carsons to secure the Summer Darts League title.

It was an action-packed night for the clubs, with Carsons cemented as top seeds in the draw after the Wilsons Arms forfeited their game, and would play The Workmen’s C.

The B squad would tackle The Clansman who had beaten AJ Joiners earlier in the evening.

In the first semi- final The Workmen’s C had Carsons in trouble as they raced into a 5-1 lead in the first to eight legs tie.

But the regular season champions clawed them back — and going into the three pair’s matches the score was tied.

The Workmen’s C had been broken and they failed to win any of the pairs games as Carsons kept up their 100 per cent record in the league.

The other semi- final saw the Workmen’s B return to winning ways against The Clansman.

They showed their best form of the season, but still went into the final against Carsons as the underdogs.

Airdrie champion Stevie Carson was first up for the B Team against David Jaimeson and got his side off to a good start with a 2-0 win.

Graham Anderson was next up for Carsons and levelled the game with a 2-0 win over Jim Wood which included a 18-dart win.

Derek Cunningham and Cammy Reynolds then fought out a draw, before Gerry Brown from the B team was well-beaten by Alan Henry, who threw 14- darter and 16- darter to impress the onlookers.

Ian Gibb then came back to get a tie against Stevie McInally.

McInally took the first game in 17-darts but Gibb was resolute to tie the encounter.

The match was then level after Del Hutton beat Scott Gibb with some style to take the match into a best of three match on the pairs games.

The Workmen threw all they had at Carsons, with Brown and Carson taking the floor in the opener and they had a sensational performance to win in 15 darts against Anderson and Jaimeson.

Scott Gibb and Jim Wood who faced Cunningham and Henry, but it was Wood with the 105 checkout who secured the title for The Workmen’s B.

In the consolation event the AJ Joiners played the Workmen’s A.

Archie Grant put AJ ahead but wins for Kenny Watters and Bobby McGuigan put the A team 4-2 up.

Charlie Morrisey then made it 6-2, but a 158 checkout and 16-dart and 17-dart wins for Alan McKay reduced the gap and a win for John Grant levelled the match.

The Workmen’s A lost the three pairs games, meaning AJ Joiners secured the Summer Consolation Trophy. RESULTS for Monday, July 31: League: Carsons 15 Wilson Arms 0, The Clansman 10 AJ Joiners 5, Workmen’s B 7 Workmen’s C 8.

Semi-final: Carsons 9 Workmen’s C 6, Workmen’s B 10 The Clansman 5. Final: Workmen’s B 9 Carsons 6. Summer Consolation Final: AJ Joiners 8 Workmen’s A 7.
