Rovers ready to prove doubters wrong again, says boss Kerr

- Mark Pirie

Brian Kerr believes his Albion Rovers players can prove the critics wrong this season in League One.

The Cliftonhill outfit come into the new campaign as favourites for relegation with most bookmakers — but following success in the Betfred Cup Kerr thinks Rovers can continue to surprise people. The boss is eyeing up a fight at the top end of the table as he prepares for his first league game since taking over against Ayr. “We’re happy with how the Betfred Cup went,” Kerr told the Advertiser. “In retrospect the game against Stenhousemuir probably cost us, but I doubt anyone would have thought we would have reached second in the group. “Over the four games, the boys did really well against some tough teams. It’s still early in the season but it’s all coming together well. “We have seen what people have been saying — a lot of the bookies have already done my team talk for me. “We have already proved a few people wrong

with our results so far, and I think we can keep proving ourselves.

“We have a really good squad here and we’re just looking forward to getting started.”

First up for Rovers is Ayr United, with Ian McCall’s side among the title favourites coming into the season.

The Honest Men arrive in Coatbridge after topping their Betfred Cup group and scoring 15 goals in four games — and Kerr admits they present very tough early season opposition.

However, he says they should be confident after drawing against both Queen of the South and Hamilton Accies in the past week.

“I’m under no illusions about how tough Ayr will be,”the gaffer continued.

“They come into the season as, I believe, title favourites. They have been going through a great patch and getting a lot of goals — but we have scored a lot as well and are now looking to tighten up the defence.

“We nearly have the full squad back after a few niggling injuries. We don’t have anything to fear though after our form so far.”
