Brewing up special tribute

- Jean Ward

The Airdrie for Independence group will next meet in Airdrie library this Saturday, from 11am.

This will be followed by a workshop to which people of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Then, on Monday, speaker Robin McAlpine from think-tank Common Weal, will give a talk entitled, What we need to do to win independence, at the town’s One Wellwynd venue from 7pm to 9pm.

Admission is free. A group of Airdrie women held a Macmillan coffee morning in memory of two of their friends.

Monklands Estate ladies Margaret MacDonald, Helen Murdoch, Jeanette Smith, Charlotte Mackenzie, Joyce MacIver, Frances Dickson and Eleanor Gowans hosted the successful event at Calderbank Parish Hall, in tribute to their friends and neighbours, Margaret Marenghi and Lorraine MacDonald, who sadly passed away five years ago now.

It was the sixth year that the band of fundraisers had organised the event and they were delighted with the response from all those who attended, and thrilled to raise £2285.

F ra n c e s told the Advertiser: “We would like to thank everyone who made a contribution to the excellent sum raised, especially the 90 plus friends who turned up to support the coffee morning, and to the other helpers on the day.

“We are incredibly grateful for their support and generosity for our coffee morning.

“It was a perfect tribute to Margaret and Lorraine.”
