‘Reconsider’ move say local politicians

-

Neil Gray and Alex Neil have requested a meeting with Royal Bank of Scotland management to request that they“reconsider and keep their presence in Airdrie”.

Mr Gray MP said:“I’ve asked for a meeting to find out how the decision was reached, given that both the business and personal finance parts of the branch always appear busy.

“I understand that internet banking is getting more and more common but many folk prefer to do their transactions face-toface, especially when it comes to deposits.”

He added:“I’m also frustrated that a flagship business in Airdrie will be lost.”

Airdrie & Shotts colleague Mr Neil MSP added:“This is very disappointing news for my constituents, both customers and particularly for staff.

“We will be doing all we can to ensure that every possible effort is made to help find a solution to prevent the closure, and protect jobs and banking services.

“RBS needs to recognise the needs of customers in Airdrie and that there is a continued need for face-to-face provision; they have a responsibility to cater to all customers – including many elderly people who prefer to visit their branch.”

Airdrie is one of four North Lanarkshire branches earmarked for closure – as is Stepps, which falls into the Coatbridge & Chryston constituency of Fulton MacGregor MSP.

He is also seeking an “urgent meeting”with bank officials to request that they“think again on this closure”.

Mr MacGregor told the Advertiser:“This is very disappointing news for customers and particularly for staff, who will now be worried about their futures so close to Christmas.

“Local banking services are vital to communities, with many people still dependant on high street services; there’s a continued need for face-to-face provision.

“I consider the proposed closure to impact on the most vulnerable, those who will not have transport to bank elsewhere, and those who don’t, for whatever reason, bank digitally.”
