NHS team take top training title
Lanarkshire’s maternity team has been recognised for its outstanding training by a prestigious professional body.
NHS Lanarkshire’s obstetrics and gynaecology team was recognised as one of best training departments in the UK by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).
The pan- Lanarkshire team, which works in the community and across the three acute University Hospitals of Monklands, Hairmyres and Wishaw, received the ‘ highly commended’ accolade for its gynaecology and obstetric training, professional development and overall performance, based on feedback from trainee doctors.
Dr Evelyn Ferguson, consultant obstetrician/ gynaecologist, told the Advertiser: “We are thrilled and honoured to receive the highly commended award for the quality of training in obstetrics and gynaecology in NHS Lanarkshire.
“We are delighted that the trainees value the effort and dedication of all staff in the health board, who help them achieve their personal training goals and that they have given us such positive feedback.”
Dr Ferguson, the health authority’s lead clinical trainer and joint RCOG college tutor, was recently awarded runner-up as the individual RCOG trainer of the year – after being nominated by the trainee doctors.
Together with her colleague Dr Sikhar Sircar, she matches individuals with suitable supervisors at the maternity unit, and tailors their daily schedule in accordance with their training requirements.
Dr Sircar explained: “We hear a lot about patient-centred care in our daily work lives.
“In Lanarkshire, we have used this ethos with our trainee-centred approach to tailoring training to each individual.”
Commenting on the team’s success, NHS Lanarkshire medical director, Dr Iain Wallace, added: “I am absolutely delighted with the department’s recognition as one of the best 10 obstetrics and gynaecology training units in the UK.
“That is a massive achievement and a real accolade to be recognised in this way.”
