Readers speaking out over controversial bid at EuroPark greenbelt development

-

Advertiser Facebook readers responded in numbers to the latest update on the controversial EuroPark proposals for greenbelt land at Calderbank and Carnbroe.

Developers Orchard Brae aim to create 2600 homes there, whilst campaigners opposing the project were joined by politicians at a community march.

Jennifer Nisbet said: “There’s destruction of green belt land to consider; 2500 homes with no mention of increased health and education infrastructure while the town centre is completely dying on its feet. This development will only make matters worse.

“Once this land is gone, it’s gone. Allocate some of the brownfield sites around Airdrie for house building and leave our last bits of green well alone.”

Alison Campbell said: “It’s absolutely dreadful. There are few truly lovely bits of countryside in Airdrie – that area is lovely, with history, wildlife and walks,” and Laura Hughes agreed: “We need to save this beautiful area from development.”

Ann McDermott posted: “I live in NYC but my mom is from Calderbank and those bankings are the most cherished part of the village. I hope this can be stopped dead in its tracks.”

However, Gerry Fergus posted: “Great idea – will enhance the local area, economy, and bring in fresh blood as well; win-win.” Jamie Leishman agreed: “I hope it gets the go-ahead and breathe some much-needed life into the town.”

Readers were proud to see the tribute paid to lifelong Airdrie fan Thomas Murning.

He passed away last month, aged 103, and his funeral procession drove a lap of honour around the Diamonds’ home ground.

Elizabeth Miller said: “That’s brilliant, well done Airdrie. Mr Murning, ‘shine like the Diamond you are’; safe home.”

Ewen C Murray added: “Well done to all involved. Rest in peace, sir.” Kathleen Proctor said: “Rest in peace Thomas – one of the kindest and funniest people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.”
