Trust pull plug on fan board plans

- Mark Pirie

The Airdrieonians Supporters Trust have axed their bid to put a fan on the board as takeover talks rumble on.

Earlier this year, the Trust committee revealed that they were set to have fan representation on the board for the first time.

It was hoped that an elected Trust member would be in place at the start of the current season after an agreement with majority shareholder Tom Wotherspoon.

However, no deal has materialised, and with the consortium fronted by Diamonds legend Bobby Watson going through the due diligence process, the Trust have formally pulled the plug on the proposal.

They have also officially removed funding from the modern apprenticeship scheme.

A spokesperson for the fan group said: “The Trust has decided to suspend further payments into the apprenticeship scheme and efforts to elect a fans’ rep onto the current board. We will review both these a r rangements when appropriate.”

A delegation from the consortium met with Hamilton Accies chief executive Colin McGowan last week, as he attempts to broker a deal on behalf of Mr Wotherspoon.

A statement from the Trust, who previously confirmed they were “actively involved” with the consortium, revealed the meeting “would form part of ongoing talks relating to the proposed takeover of the club” as the consortium edge closer to purchasing the majority stake.
