Stamp enthusiasts view local scenes
Memories of some of the villages in the original county of Lanarkshire were shared during a nostalgic meeting at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society.
Historic Clydesdale was the title of the display presented to members by Crossford Stamp Club “and friends”at the organisation’s latest gathering.
There was much reminiscing amongst guests as they viewed a selection of historic postcards of the county’s villages.
These included Alan Rushworth’s display on Crossford, Alan Wishart’s on Law, Bob Bradford’s on Forth and Wilsontown and Bill Muir’s look at Drumassie and Waygateshead.
This delightful, picture-themed tour of the iconic villages continued in the second round with Bill Groves’talk on the saga of Westport Post Office in Lanark, Gary Cheyne reflecting on Elvanfoot, Leadhills, Biggar, Roberton, Abington and Wiston and Alex Grimson on covenanting history and postmarks of Law.
The Crossford Stamp Club also took a moment to pay tribute to a pair of long-serving members who had passed away – Gordon McDowall and Eric Ross – before giving displays from their collections; Winter Olympics and the mountains of Mid Atlantic Ridge (Iceland), respectively.
The Lanarkshire society’s Ken Norris led members in giving warm thanks to all“for delivering such a wonderful variety of material to view and reminisce about”.
Thanks were also expressed to Dr Ken Liddell, who organised the evening.
Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s next meeting will see Dr David Stalker present his display on New Zealand.
It takes place this Friday at the Caledonian Bowling Club, at Motherwell Road in Hamilton, from 7.30pm.
