DELVE INTO THE ADVERTISER ARCHIVES Angling for victory at contest
A pair of Airdrie teenagers enjoyed off- the- hook success as they “plaiced” very impressively at a national angling competition in 2002.
Paul Morris, 17, and Gary Mullarkey, 14, dipped their rods in the waters of the U-18 home international fishing tournament – and caught a pair of silver medals.
The Hillend Angling Club duo represented Scotland at the prestigious contest and are pictured with Robert Potter and Cecilia and Gordon Ferguson of St Andrew’s Bar in Airdrie, who paid for their trip.
Paul said: “I was beaten by the English boy, who caught four rainbow trout, and it was a bit disappointing to finish second in my final junior year.
“But it was still a great weekend representing Scotland.” An organisation offering vital support to Monklands residents was looking to add to its numbers back in 1983.
Airdrie Citizens Advice Bureau put out an appeal for new volunteers to help its team deal with problems affecting members of the public.
Staff members Agnes Henderson, Liz Jarvie, Isabel Neville, Janet Cleland, Jim Kelly and Amy Speirs are pictured launching the appeal in the September 9 paper of that year.
The bureau itself was also on the move to plush new premises in Airdrie Resource Centre, with increased opening hours.
