Pupils build for future in Bargeddie challenge
Housebuilder visit
Pupils from Bargeddie Primary hit the roof with excitement as they took on the challenge of designing and constructing model houses.
The youngsters got creative during the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths ( STEM) week, with the help of an expert team from housebuilders Taylor Wimpey West Scotland.
Groups chose from a variety of materials, with each completed model being judged against criteria including which house was strongest, tallest, “coolest-looking”, best functioning, cheapest and displaying the overall best design.
Several sessions took place during the course of the week, with staff members giving an insight into their work, including at the company’s nearby Burnside View construction site.
Technical management trainee Errin Hendry-Giles, who led the sessions, said: “It’s crucial that we play our role in inspiring children to enjoy STEM subjects in order to futureproof our industry.
“Our project got the children thinking and using these subjects in real time to create some great models, and we were able to help the children reach the conclusion that they’re important because they help us to solve problems at work, school and everyday life.”
Class teacher Lynn Logan, who organised the school’s STEM week, said: “The sessions provided by the Taylor Wimpey team were a fun and engaging way to bring the subjects to life.
“Our children enjoyed learning more about the housebuilding industry, and Taylor Wimpey’s insight reminds us how crucial learning in the STEM subjects is for many industries. ”
