Donating ill-fitting clothes can help charity

-

Super slimmers from Airdrie and Coatbridge are celebrating losing weight by donating their ill-fitting clothing to charity.

As part of a national campaign, members of both towns’Slimming World groups are being invited to donate“clothes, shoes, bags and accessories”they no longer need to local shops via bag collections.

The kind-hearted dieters are so confident they’ll never need their over-sized clothes again, they intend to“collect as many bags as possible”between now and May 19, with each one worth a £25 donation to Cancer Research UK.

The“big Slimming World clothes throw”is taking place at all 18,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland and members are hoping to better last year’s impressive £3.3 million total.

As well as fundraising, the weight-loss organisation aims to raise awareness of the links between obesity and cancer.

Obesity is the biggest cause of cancer after smoking, but only 15 per cent of people are aware of the link.

Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing 13 different types of cancer, including bowel, kidney and breast cancer.

Airdrie Slimming World consultant Sharon McGinness said:“The annual‘big Slimming World clothes throw’is one of my favourite events in the calendar.

“Each year we have beaten our previous year’s target, so I can’t wait to see what we can achieve this time.

“It’s such a liberating feeling having the confidence to bag up clothes you’ll never fit into again, all while raising money for an extremely important cause.

“My members can’t wait to make room for a new summer wardrobe by taking part; I know the atmosphere in group will be electric when we bring all the bags together.”

Sharon added:“When we meet each week, we laugh together, share challenges and tips for overcoming them, celebrate success and swap inspiration, tips and recipes.

“We really are one big family and I will be so proud to see them say goodbye to those larger sizes and set targets for enjoying a healthier holiday season feeling absolutely fantastic.”

Anyone who would like to take part in the“big Slimming World clothes throw”, or looking to find out more about Slimming World, is invited to get in touch with Sharon by calling 07736 932345.
