Greig to quit Cairn hotseat

- Mark Pirie

Davie Greig has thanked his Gartcairn players after he revealed he will leave the club at the end of the season.

Greig took on the hotseat at MTC Park in January last year and earned the Airdrie Junior outfit their first ever promotion this season.

This follows on from a run to the Junior Cup last eight last term and narrowly missing out on promotion, when they were pipped with two games to go by East Kilbride Thistle.

Cairn are also still in the running to win the Central District Division Two title after defeating Bellshill 3-0 on Saturday.

If they win their final two games, starting with this weekend at MTC Park against Dunipace, they will finish top.

Despite his success on the park, Greig feels like it’s the right time to exit the club.

“There is nothing sinister in it,” he told the Advertiser.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club as there are some great guys.

“When we came in we were told to get the team out of the division and we missed out on that with two games to go last season but have managed it this season.

“We achieved our goals and

could go even further by the time we finish the season.

“Every manager will say their boys have been tremendous, but mine really have.

“We just don’t want to overstay our welcome!”

He added that he hoped to be back in management in the future: “Hopefully another team will take a punt on us.”

A statement released by the club said: “The club would like to thank Davie for the great cup runs of season 2016/ 17 taking us to the quarter-finals of both the Scottish Cup, West Cup and guaranteeing promotion this year with the chance to win the league still in his hands. The aim is to go out on a high by winning the league.

“We also thank Davie and his back room staff for giving us early notice to help us find his successor.”
